AWS Cloud Architect

Cheppers is looking for an experienced AWS Cloud Architect / Principal Cloud Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and evolution of cloud infrastructure solutions for our clients and internal development teams.

We are an AWS Partner and GitLab Partner with deep expertise in building, hosting, and operating highly available websites, applications, cloud-native platforms, DevOps workflows, and modern AI/GenAI-powered solutions.

This is a senior technical role for someone who combines hands-on engineering with architectural ownership, technical leadership, and client-facing consulting. You will help define cloud strategies, guide engineering teams, establish best practices, and ensure our solutions are secure, scalable, reliable, and maintainable.

Key responsibilities

  • Play a key role in shaping AWS-based cloud architectures and technical decisions for SaaS, PaaS, web application, and enterprise cloud environments, with a focus on reliability, scalability, security, maintainability, and cost optimization
  • Design and implement Infrastructure as Code solutions using tools such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or Pulumi
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to cloud engineers, DevOps engineers, and development teams
  • Review and improve existing cloud environments, identifying opportunities for better performance, security, automation, observability, and resilience
  • Design and optimize CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows using tools such as GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, and related automation platforms
  • Architect and operate containerized production environments using Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, EKS, or similar technologies
  • Design, implement, and maintain observability, monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions for high-availability production systems, while contributing to incident reviews and continuous operational improvement
  • Lead infrastructure planning for complex client projects, including migrations, modernization initiatives, disaster recovery planning, and multi-environment setups
  • Collaborate closely with clients, product owners, developers, and technical stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, architectural diagrams, implementation plans, and operational runbooks
  • Support sales and pre-sales activities by contributing to technical proposals, solution designs, estimations, and client discussions
  • Establish cloud engineering standards, reusable patterns, best practices, and internal tooling for Cheppers’ development teams
  • Stay up to date with AWS, DevOps, cloud-native, and AI infrastructure trends, and help introduce relevant technologies into our delivery practices
  • Design and support infrastructure for modern AI/GenAI workloads, including AWS Bedrock-based solutions, RAG systems, vector databases, scalable inference environments, and automation workflows.

Required qualifications

  • 6+ years of hands-on experience in cloud engineering, DevOps, infrastructure, or platform engineering roles
  • 4+ years of practical experience designing, building, and operating AWS-based infrastructure
  • Proven experience architecting and operating production-grade cloud environments, including high availability, scalability, performance tuning, cost optimization, backup strategies, disaster recovery, and incident response
  • Strong knowledge of AWS core services, including compute, networking, storage, IAM, databases, monitoring, security, and automation services
  • Advanced experience with at least one Infrastructure as Code tool: Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Pulumi, or similar
  • Strong experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Amazon ECS, or Amazon EKS
  • Deep understanding of CI/CD concepts, deployment automation, branching strategies, release workflows, and environment management
  • Strong Linux system administration skills, including shell scripting, networking, process management, package management, and troubleshooting
  • Experience designing observability solutions using tools such as CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/OpenSearch, or similar platforms
  • Solid understanding of cloud security best practices, including IAM design, secrets management, network segmentation, encryption, compliance considerations, and secure deployment patterns
  • Strong ownership, problem-solving, architectural thinking, and communication skills, with the ability to lead technical discussions with both engineering teams and client stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.

Nice to have

  • Active AWS certifications, especially AWS Solutions Architect Professional, DevOps Engineer Professional, Security Specialty, or Advanced Networking Specialty
  • Experience working in an agency, consultancy, or client-facing technical environment
  • Advanced GitLab experience, including GitLab CI/CD, Runner infrastructure, security features, or administration
  • Experience with AI/GenAI-related cloud architectures, including LLM integrations, vector databases, inference workloads, or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems
  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible, Chef, or Puppet
  • Programming experience in Python, Go, TypeScript, or similar languages
  • Experience building internal developer platforms, self-service infrastructure, or reusable DevOps tooling
  • Experience with advanced AWS architecture patterns, such as serverless, event-driven systems, multi-account environments, AWS Organizations, Control Tower, Landing Zones, cloud migrations, or hybrid infrastructure.
  • Experience with automated testing for infrastructure, security scanning, policy-as-code, or compliance automation
  • Knowledge of Drupal hosting, web application infrastructure, CDN configuration, caching layers, and high-traffic website operations
  • Contributions to relevant open-source projects or technical communities

Benefits

  • Participation in interesting, complex, and long-term cloud infrastructure projects for international clients across Europe and the USA
  • Strategic technical role with real influence on cloud architecture, DevOps practices, and engineering standards
  • Opportunities for continuous professional growth and valuable training, including AWS certifications
  • Access to modern cloud-native, AI/GenAI, and automation technologies used in real-world enterprise environments
  • Company English lessons with a native teacher
  • Flexible working hours, home office options, and a healthy work-life balance
  • Dog-friendly downtown office in Budapest

Ideal candidate profile

The ideal candidate is a senior cloud professional who enjoys both architecture and hands-on engineering. You are comfortable designing cloud systems from scratch, improving existing infrastructure, mentoring others, and discussing technical trade-offs with clients and internal teams.

You think beyond implementation: you care about reliability, security, maintainability, automation, cost efficiency, and long-term scalability. You are pragmatic, proactive, and able to balance best practices with real-world project constraints.
